The Light Side of Judgment

This week we enter into the New Moon of Virgo. The astrological sign of Virgo is known for its organizational skills, emotional intelligence and decisive nature. If you are a Virgo or have friends and family members with Virgo in their chart, you may already have some insight as to the kind of energy that will permeate the universe over the coming month.

Virgos are known as one of the most judgmental signs of the Zodiac. Many of us who study spirituality label judgment as a bad thing but it is not always unfavorable. Judgment is a critical faculty even as it pertains to our spiritual work. It’s what gives us the ability to choose one path over another, to decipher right from wrong and to make a commitment to change. You could call this the “Light” side of judgment. With a little effort, we can all tap into these gifts of Virgo during this time period.

Judgment becomes a negative characteristic when it creates space between us and our children, our parents, friends, co-workers and whoever else we’ve judged. Into that space will enter anger, hatred, and all sorts of destructive emotions. When we judge someone harshly, we are focusing on what we feel is wrong with them instead of seeing the spark of the Creator that exists within all human beings. If we choose to focus on what’s negative, we connect with and experience negativity as a result. On the other hand, if we seek to find what is positive in a person, we connect with their goodness and experience goodness. The choice is always up to us.

By the way, this spiritual principle doesn’t only pertain to judging others. Virgos are notorious for being overly critical of themselves. The next thirty days will act as a powerful lens through which to view what traits we would like to change in ourselves. The trick is to let it inspire you instead of bringing you down.

Go easy on yourself and others. Seek to understand, not to judge. Look for the good in every person and every situation in your life.

This month of Virgo will offer us an unusual opportunity to create exceptional improvements in our lives and in our connections with others.

Chodesh Tov,
Yehuda
