Taken from a powerful lecture about the 72 Names of God, Rav Berg explains the primacy of the precept to “Love thy neighbor as thyself,” noting that all of the other precepts in the Torah exist simply to condition the individual to achieve a consciousness of love for one’s fellow. The Rav goes on to explain that fulfillment of the condition of “Loving one’s neighbor as oneself” is a prerequisite—the only one, in fact—for use of kabbalistic tools such as the 72 Names of God.
