Giving respect to other people is one of the most important and Light-revealing spiritual teachings to master. It is a key ingredient that separates regular students of spirituality from serious students of spirituality.

Most of us have an intuitive understanding of the importance of treating others with respect, but practicing it on a daily basis is quite difficult. Too often we find reasons to treat others with disrespect. Sometimes we judge them as undeserving based on what we see; other times we just don’t like them.

The Sages explain that the way to overcome this obstacle is to visualize each person we meet as part of the Creator. They tell us to envision the spark of the Light of the Creator in them.

This seems easy to master in theory, but it escapes us the moment we become caught up in the rush of life. If we wish to move forward in our personal transformation, to open our hearts and minds to a greater awareness of our being, we will want to look past the illusionary shell surrounding people and concealing their Godly essence. We will want to remind ourselves, over and over, “She is a part of the Creator. He is a part of the Creator.”

As I explain in my monthly Rosh Chodesh/New Moon Video, we have the potential to sink or soar this month. How we treat people will determine in which direction we move. If we can internalize the understanding that every human being contains the spark of the Creator, we will be more inclined to act and speak with respect and human dignity and thereby soar. But if we act unjustly and without respect, we will not benefit.

Perhaps the greatest motivation for treating individuals with tolerance and compassion, in addition to making others happy, is that we also reveal a great amount of light and fulfillment for ourselves and our families.

I wish you infinite blessings and Light,

Michael Berg
